TIM CHAMBERS ON COMEBACK TRAIL

Former UNLV baseball coach Tim Chambers, fired in 2015 over addiction issues, has started his comeback. He’s joining the Las Vegas Baseball Academy’s Cardinals, a team up of high school juniors and seniors in the valley. The Cardinals have helped provide the opportunity for players in that age group to get high school scholarships and to move on to the professional ranks.

Burlin Germany, who manages the Cardinals, told Norm Clarke’s Vegas Diary that Chambers is joining his staff to “work his way back into coaching baseball.”

Germany said Chambers, 52, called him on Friday to accept the job.

“He’s a great baseball guy who made a mistake in his life,” said Germany. “We are going to help support him to get back into the game.”

Chambers turned around UNLV’s program after building College of Southern Nevada into a national powerhouse. CSN won the junior college World Series in 2003 under Chambers, who was named Coach of the Year.

In 2010 he coached the Harper-led Coyotes to the NJCAA semi-finals.

He began his head coaching career at Bishop Gorman High School in 1991. He was named the NIAA Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1993 and coached the Las Vegas Knights American League team to the 1998 American Legion World Series.

Chambers developed an addiction problem after numerous back surgeries.

“He is doing much better now and wants to work his way back,” said Germany.
