June 3, 2001: Rocker Tom Petty marries longtime girlfriend Dana York in a low-key Vegas ceremony after two sold-out shows at the Hard Rock Hotel. Three weeks later they repeat the ceremony in front of family and friends in Malibu, with Little Richard officiating.

 June 4, 2007: The fourth and final season of the World Series of Blackjack, filmed at the Las Vegas Hilton, premieres on the Game Show Network. Despite adding celebrity players such as Penn Jillette, Orel Hersheiser and Caroline Rhea, the show lacks the appeal of televised poker and is cancelled.

 June 5, 2012: McCarran International Airport officials cancel the tradition of having showgirls and Elvis impersonators greet a new airline for the first flight of Dutch carrier ArkeFly two days away. The reason: President Obama is landing there two hours later, and security people don’t want the distraction.

 June 6, 1997: Con Air, a hit thriller starring Nicolas Cage and John Cusack, debuts in theaters. Cage plays a former Army Ranger aboard a flight hijacked by prisoners. Cage saves the day by crashing the plane into the lobby of the Sands Hotel. It’s filmed at the real Sands, which closed a year earlier.

June 7, 2011: Carolyn Goodman, wife of outgoing Mayor Oscar Goodman, is elected to succeed him. She is the city’s second female mayor and apparently the first woman elected to replace her husband to lead a major American city.

 June 8, 1999: Oscar Goodman, a colorful, controversial attorney who made his name and his living defending accused mobsters, including Meyer Lansky, is elected mayor of Las Vegas. Outspoken and popular, he’s re-elected twice and ponders running for governor, but decides against it.

 June 9, 1974: The first International Conference on Gambling and Risk Taking opens at the Sahara Hotel, with 19 academic research papers presented. The conference is held every several years subsequently at various locations, and returns to Las Vegas in 2013.

June 10, 1947: Bugsy Siegel persuades Liberace to leave the Last Frontier and move to the mob-run Flamingo. Liberace said he liked the Last Frontier, “But how do you tell Bugsy Siegel no?” So he chooses the new gig, a higher salary, and the opportunity to keep playing with unbroken fingers.
