2018 is off to a head-spinning start and we still have five days to go.

January has been ablaze with breath-taking developments: Our over-achieving first-year hockey team. A new Steve Wynn hotel project. Another major sports/entertainment area. Elton John’s retirement. And sex scandals…major sex scandals. Allegedly.

This week alone casino titans Wynn and Sheldon Adelson separately announced major projects on the Strip.Wynn revealed more details about Wynn West, a 2,000-3,000 hotel which he’s building on the former Frontier site where Wynn, then 21, was responsible for uncrating slot machines.

Early in the week Adelson and his Las Vegas Sands Corporations announced a partnership with Madison Square Garden to build an 18,000-seat arena east of the High Roller Ferris wheel.

That latest arena development sets up a three-way, high-stakes competition for an NBA team here. Until this week, it appeared that MGM Resorts had the inside track because it owns T-Mobile Arena, where the expansion Vegas Golden Knights are selling out and the former San Antonio Stars of the WNBA are relocating this fall. Also in the picture is a prospective ownership group headed by former UNLV basketball star Jackie Robinson. They own the land between the Fontainbleau and SLS, formerly the Sahara. This group has been quietly confident it has the backing and friends in the NBA to go the distance.

And that was on Monday.

Tuesday brought news that the Rocket Man, who’s been in the rotation at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace since 2004, is retiring at the end of his 300-date, three-year tour. He’s been a solid Las Vegas draw over the years. His loss and Britney Spears’ departure after four years at Planet Hollywood means Caesars Palace has two major marquee names to replace. Spears is reportedly on her way to the new Park Theatre at the soon-to-be-renamed Monte Carlo.

Two sex scandals that will likely have legs involve two of the most powerful men in America: an already beleaguered President Donald Trump and Wynn, a Las Vegas institution and the Republican National Committee’s Finance Chair.

A old story linking Trump with porn star Stormy Daniels re-heated with a fresh details that the then-GOP presidential candidate had Daniels paid $130,000 in hush money to keep details of a 2016 extramarital affair from getting out.

Friday supplied a shocker when the Wall Street Journal reported “dozens” of women are accusing Wynn of sexual misconduct. Wynn, 75, was portrayed as a serial sexual predator, with employees coming forward with alleged accounts of sexual assault, abuse and rape, according to the Journal.

A married manicurist received a $7.5 million settlement from Wynn after she told her supervisor Wynn had pressured her into having sex. The detailed report was filed with the casino’s human-resources department.

In a statement to the Journal and sent out as a news release, Wynn stated, “the idea that I ever assaulted any woman is preposterous.
“We find ourselves in a world where people can make allegations, regardless of the truth, and a person is left with the choice of weathering insulting publicity or engaging in multi-year lawsuits. It is deplorable for anyone to find themselves in this situation.”

Later he blamed the story on his ex-wife, saying in a statement to The Associated Press that his ex-wife, Elaine, is behind a smear campaign.
“The conduct of Elaine during the course of the pending lawsuits has been shocking and deeply disturbing to me personally and as the CEO of Wynn Resorts,” Wynn said.

All that AND the Vegas Golden Knights are heading into the NHL’s All-Star weekend with the second best record: 32-12-4, behind Tampa Bay’s 34-12-3.

Hang on. At this rate it’s going to be The Year of Shockers.

OUCH! NEIL DIAMOND, ELTON JOHN ANNOUNCE RETIREMENTS

Elton John’s upcoming 300-date “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour will be the end of the road.

The Rocket Man, who has been headlining at Caesars Palace since 2004, announced on Wednesday that he’s retiring from touring in 2021 to spend more time with his two sons.

John’s surprise announcement came a day after after Neil Diamond revealed he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and was ending his career effective immediately. He was on his 50th anniversary tour.

John, 70, and his longtime writing partner, Bernie Taupin, are being honored Sunday at the 60th GRAMMY Awards where they will be receiving the Recording Academy President’s Merit Award. John, a five-time GRAMMY winner, is scheduled to perform with Miley Cyrus.

He told Entertainment Tonight his decision was “all about the boys. I love my boys,” he said, referring to Zachary, 7, and Elijah, 5, whom he adopted with husband and Canadian film maker David Furnish.

John has done more than 200 shows at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. His last show there is May 19.

Wired.com.uk reported John is experimenting with using virtual reality and artificial intelligence “as a way of preserving his musical legacy way beyond his normal life. In fifty years, musicians who haven’t been born yet might sit down at a piano with an AI Elton and collaborate with him on a new tune.”

The Scene and Heard

A belated job-well-done to longtime Las Vegas publicist Laura Herlovich, who has sold the company she started 28 years ago, PR Plus, to partner Alissa Kelly. When I moved here in 1999 I asked a colleague who I should reach out to first in the PR community. The response was “Start with Laura Herlovich.” Her biggest clients at the time was the Hard Rock Hotel. She was and remains a good friend and a true professional. “To be clear (smiley face) I’m not ‘retiring’ just dialing it back a notch,” said wrote. She will continue to represent the Pawn Stars, Pia Zadora and Boyz II Men and share the Westgate with PR Plus.

On This Day…

January 26, 1960: Frank Sinatra headlines the “Summit at the Sands,” a three-week gig marking the heyday of the Rat Pack – Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. They filmed Ocean’s 11 during the day, then stage raucous, impromptu shows at the Copa Room at night. (Thanks to Mike Precker)

Sightings

Donald Trump Jr., at the SHOT Show on Tuesday at the Sands Expo Convention (Venetian). Alex Hollings of the website SOFREP, for special ops veterans, described the industry’s largest gun show this way: If you haven’t attended SHOT or a similar convention before…just imagine your high school reunion if the decorating theme as $6,000 AR (assault rifle) platforms, and you’ve pretty much got it.”…

Last weekend at Topgolf (MGM Grand): Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner, Olympic swim stars Missy Franklin and Michael Phelps in separate groups. Golf ace Jordan Spieth took some swings with Phelps.

The Punch Line

“Rum maker Bacardi announced yesterday that it is acquiring Patron Spirits for $5.1 billion. And like most Bacardi announcements, it was shouted at 5 a.m. in the back seat of an Uber.” – Seth Meyers

Whole Lotta Love Coming Your Way If You Adopt Me Today!

Greetings! My name is Panda Bear and I’m a rolly polly bundle of love looking to go home with you today!

I love the attention and affection from people and pride myself on my easy going nature. If you’ve got the treats I’ve got the time!

Granted, I know I can use to lose a few pounds and I know the wonderful person that adopts me will be responsible with distribution of said treats and that is just fine by me, as I know slimming down is in my best interest.

I am expected to do well with other medium size doggies AND kids so please bring down the whole fam (including four legged ones) to meet me in person!
Adopt me today so we can waddle out of here together!

Show Me All This World Has To Offer!

Greetings! My name is Dexter and it is crystal clear to me that I am the dog for you! I am super friendly and I have a lot of energy!

I’d love to find a human that can match my enthusiasm for life and adventure! I came to the Nevada SPCA from another shelter and I just know that an experienced and knowledgeable person will hurry down here and scoop me up!

I’m sure you are mesmerized by beautiful eyes, it should be noted that I have a cataract in my right eye which has caused it to go blind. It does not bother me at this time and I know my caring human will always keep it monitored to make sure it does not start to bulge or cause me pain in the future, and if it does will be sure to have it examined and ok with the fact that it may need to be removed.

It would be great to have you bring in any dogs you already have in the home so proper meet and greets can be conducted and it would most preferred that any children in the home be mature.

Show me all the love there is in the world and adopt me today!
